UK Passport Photo Requirements — Size, Background & Digital Specs
HM Passport Office has specific photo requirements. Your photo must meet all criteria or your application will be delayed. Here is the complete guide.
Photo Size
UK passport photos must be 35 mm wide × 45 mm high. The head (chin to crown) must be between 29 mm and 34 mm, filling approximately 55–75% of the photo. Digital photos must be at least 900 pixels wide × 1200 pixels tall.
Background
Plain light grey or cream background. Not white. No shadows, patterns, or textures. The background must be a single, uniform colour behind your head.
Face & Expression
Face directly towards the camera. Neutral expression — mouth closed, both eyes open, no smiling. Eyes must be clearly visible and open. No hair across eyes. The full face must be visible from chin to crown.
Glasses & Head Coverings
Glasses must be removed unless medically necessary (requires a signed doctor letter). If worn for medical reasons, frames must not obscure eyes and there must be no glare or reflections. Head coverings only allowed for religious or medical reasons; full face must remain visible.
Photo Quality
Must be in focus, sharp, and clear. No red-eye. No flash reflection. No creases, tears, or marks. Taken within the last month. Digital alterations that change appearance are not permitted.
